Can a Variable ND Cause the Same Problems as a Polarizer on Windows?

You already learned CPL can trash tempered glass. Your variable ND is for bright exteriors and video—surely that is different? Then a wide interior-to-glass frame looks wrong and you wonder if ND is guilty too.

Variable ND filters are built from two polarized layers. They inherit the same tempered-glass and wide-angle polarization problems. Fixed (single) ND does not work that way.

Why variable ND behaves like a CPL

Twisting a VND rotates polarized glass against polarized glass to change density. Point that stack at tempered windows—especially wide—and stress patterns can appear just as with a circular polarizer. The wider the lens, the nastier it often gets.

Fixed ND vs variable

A solid ND is ordinary density glass (or resin)—no polarizer sandwich—so tempered-pane rainbows are not the same failure mode. When you need stops of light indoors for a stills reason, fixed ND or simply bracketing usually beats a VND on glass walls.

Practical limits for RE

Many shooters keep VND for exterior video and bright outdoor stills, not for stopped-down high-rise window pulls. If you must roll video near big tempered panes, test the twist range on site and back off density when patterns show. Prefer clear glass for critical interior window frames.

Quick reference

• Variable ND = two polarizers → same glass artifacts risk.

• Fixed ND: generally fine for tempered panes.

• Wider lenses amplify the problem.

• Use VND outdoors / video; beware interior tempered glass.

• Test on the actual window before the hero take.

Do not assume “ND” is innocent. Variable ND carries polarizer DNA—treat tempered windows with the same caution you give a CPL.
