What Should You Do If a Real Estate Shoot Feels Unsafe?

Business strategy

You book what sounded like a normal listing. You arrive to a rough building, no power in most units, and a neighborhood that makes a seven-thousand-dollar uninsured kit feel like a target. The fee is tiny. Your gut says leave. What do you actually do?

Thread rule: safety is more important than anything else. Communicate early, bring the client into the risk call, and walk when you must. Declining or bailing is professional—not weak.

Before you unlock the door

Ask whether the property is rough and whether you are okay going. Get clear access info. Prefer the listing agent on site—having them navigate the building reduces isolation. If they might not show, say from the car that you may bail without them. Commitment after they arrive is optional; your call stands.

On site habits

Move light and fast

Do not put bags down. Skip extra hero angles. Disassociate enough to finish the required frames, then go. Dark basements and busted doors are exit cues, not creativity challenges. State you are about done and leave if something feels off.

Exteriors and exits

Some shoot exteriors last so the car is packed when you leave. If lingering with pro gear feels wrong, phone exteriors and go. A finished gallery is worthless if you do not get home.

You can say no mid-job

Caught off guard by a property type you did not know was in the cards? Decline next time. For this time, heads-up to the agency and a realtor present may get you through—or you still leave. Learning which jobs to refuse is part of the craft.

Quick reference

• Confirm condition and agent presence before you commit.

• Keep gear on your body; no bag dumps.

• Shoot required frames only—then leave.

• Bail mid-shoot if you feel unsafe.

• Phone exteriors beat risking the full kit.

Respect the space and the people in it—and respect your own safety. No listing is worth becoming a story about what almost happened.
