Should You Take Commission Pay for Brokerage Media Work?

Business strategy

Pay is two and a half percent tied to company sales—not per shoot. A slow week yields about a thousand dollars for sixty-five hours. Developers promise multi-unit payouts when you only shoot a few floor plans. Does commission media ever work?

It can pencil only with high average prices, real close rates, and sane hours. Most thread voices say do the math before you agree—or demand a salary when they dictate your day.

Run the numbers before day one

Ask average sale price, broker commission, whether buyer sides count, gross versus net, and what share of listings actually close. Example shape: a one-million sale at two and a half percent broker fee is twenty-five thousand; two and a half percent of that is six hundred twenty-five for you—if it closes. Misses and delays destroy the week you already worked.

Multi-unit ‘paid for all units’ hooks

Shooting three or four unique townhomes but getting paid on twelve copy-paste units sounds clever. It still fails when daily demand and overnight turnaround erase your life—and when a “slow sales week” leaves effort and pay mismatched. Promises of bigger checks later are not cash today.

Commission vs how they treat you

If you are labeled a contractor but they set schedule, overnight delivery, and exclusive control of your time, that mix is a warning—employee demands without employee pay or benefits. Prefer hourly or salary with overtime, or renegotiate: percentage only on what you shot, future work at a flat fee payable on delivery.

Compare to retail days

The same photo-plus-video volume at market rates can land thousands in a day for independents. In-house exists partly so brokerages avoid those invoices. Your commission must beat what you would bill solo for the same grind—or it is a bad trade.

Quick reference

• Model ASP × broker % × your % × close rate.

• Unsold listings can zero out finished work.

• Multi-unit upside ≠ overnight slavery.

• Demand salary/OT if they control your calendar.

• Compare to what the same day bills retail.

Commission pay is a bet on closings and honesty. Do not sign until the spreadsheet—and the schedule—both look livable.
