You mounted a circular polarizer on a tilt-shift (or ultra-wide) for interiors. Floors look amazing—then a tempered high-rise pane blooms with weird patterns when you stop down for a window drop-in. Is the filter broken, or is the glass fighting you?
Tempered and specialty-coated glass often shows polarization stress under a CPL. Pros keep a non-filtered adapter as the default and only swap the polarizer on when glare control is worth the risk. Zoom the LCD before you trust the frame.
Thicker glass, modern coatings, and tempered panes make polarizer artifacts more obvious—rainbow stress patterns or blotchy darkening that does not match the room. Molded plastic (washer and dryer doors, some oven windows) can show similar weirdness. It is physics, not a soft lens.
Ultra-wide and shift setups already stress even polarization across the frame. Stopping down for clean window drop-ins can make the pattern scream in the bright glass. Floors and furnishings may still love the CPL while the pane hates it—check both in the same composition.
Carry a standard clear adapter or unfiltered path as your everyday mount. Switch to the polarizer only for glare on floors, counters, or soft furnishings. If you must keep CPL on for a mixed room, zoom in on the camera screen and hunt artifacts before you leave the stick.
