How Many Brackets and Stops Should You Use for Real Estate Photos?

Everyone says two-stop gaps—but your midpoint feels wrong when frames jump that far. You favor five brackets at one and a third stops. Who is right for listing work?

Both camps deliver. Choose a spacing that covers windows and shadows for your camera and rooms, then shoot fast. The stack matters more than matching someone else’s exact EV list.

A proven default: five at two stops

Indoors, a common set is five frames two stops apart—zero, minus two, minus four, plus two, plus four. You accept that some frames will be too bright or too dark. Time is money; the merge still has what you need.

Tighter gaps when two feels coarse

If two-stop jumps miss a useful middle, try one and a third or one and two thirds with five frames. Three to five exposures at about two stops also works for many in aperture-priority or manual with the bracket stepping shutter. Same math either way: lock aperture and ISO, let shutter walk.

Camera limits and dark-room traps

Some bodies cap auto exposure bracketing around plus-or-minus two—too narrow for blazing windows, so you may need manual extra frames or a wider custom sequence. In dark rooms, watch the longest exposure: multi-second shutters invite ghosting from any movement in the merge.

Speed over perfection

You do not need a perfect middle exposure every room. Confirm the dark frame holds windows and the bright frame opens shadows you care about, then move. Consistent spacing you trust beats reinventing ETTR math on every kitchen.

Quick reference

• Common: 5 brackets × 2 stops (e.g. 0, ±2, −4, +2, +4).

• Alternative: 5 × 1⅓–1⅔ if 2-stop gaps feel coarse.

• Also common: 3–5 frames at ~2 stops.

• Watch AEB ±2 caps on bright-window days.

• Avoid multi-second ghosts in dark merges.

Pick a bracket recipe and trust the stack. Stops and frame count serve the window pull—not a debate about the perfect center click.
