The gym owner wants interiors and a headshot. You assume Airbnb-style wides and details—but sale, lease, and marketing briefs are different shoots. Guessing the goal is how commercial first jobs go sideways.
Ask what the images are for before you light or edit. Facility documentation, lifestyle branding, and MLS-style sale assets need different framing, people policies, and retouch intensity.
For the gym’s own site and social, sell the workout lifestyle—branding colors, yellow straps, aggressive contrast that matches gym vibes, and detail shots that feel like atmosphere. For MLS or property sale, buyers may not care it is a gym today—show clean layout and volume; skip lifestyle flourishes that confuse the asset.
Peak natural light often equals peak members. Pros shoot gyms at odd hours—early morning or late night—so the floor is empty. If the gym has not opened yet, use that window for day and night sets without clearing people. Open commercial properties force awkward asks; closed is always better.
Clarify: full-space heroes, tighter sections, lifestyle with the owner, or all three. Breaking the floor into manageable sections is easier than one impossible ultra-wide. Headshots need a separate lighting plan—umbrella, controlled ambient—not the same setup as architecture.
First commercial gym for a new photographer often means the client’s bar is practical, not magazine. Still ask the goal and show architectural gym references so taste aligns. Empty floor, clear brief, and honest technique beat overpromising flambient magic under black ceilings.
• Ask: MLS/lease vs gym marketing vs both.
• Marketing: lifestyle, brand color, details, stronger contrast.
• Sale: layout and space; less “gym vibe” storytelling.
• Prefer closed / empty; odd hours beat peak member light.
• Separate owner portraits from architecture frames.
Win the brief before you win the lighting. The right gym shoot starts with why the photos exist—not which strobe is in the bag.
