Everyone says “just do free shoots.” You tried. Few agents reciprocated; many would not even leave a Google review. Your work is strong. Is free still the path—or a trap?
Both stories are true. Free plus obsessive customer service built some six-figure calendars. Others found freebies attract agents who never intended to pay. Choose based on who you give free to—and what you demand next.
Quality alone does not convert freeloaders. Agents who take a complimentary shoot without kindness or a review teach you their value system. Referrals and networking with people who already buy premium work often beat offering yourself for nothing.
Some operators swear free shoots plus above-and-beyond service got them established—then volume followed. If you use free, treat it as a controlled trial with clear next steps, not an open buffet. Pair it with leveling up how easy you are to book, pay, and love on site.
One strong take: turn off obsessing over Google reviews—serious agents you want may not shop that way, and reviews can only hurt. Others note Google AI recommendations can send management or rehab volume. Decide if you want inbound strangers or named top producers you already pursue.
View agents as small partners and each shoot as a collaboration. Charge for professionalism and speed. Expand the team later—first fill the book with people who pay timely and are cool to work with. Free is optional seasoning, not the meal.
• Free often fails to get reviews or paid repeats.
• Free + elite service still built some careers.
• Prefer agents who already value premium media.
• Don’t build identity around Google review farming.
• Sell reliability and partnership more than free files.
Free shoots are a tactic, not a business model. Use them sparingly on the right targets—or skip them and go where paid winners already live.
